Energy Saving Tips
- Have your heating system cleaned and serviced annually. This yearly maintenance will keep your system operating at peak efficiency and safety.
- Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is going.
- Insulate appropriately for your climate for more efficient heating and cooling.
- Have a well-ventilated attic to reduce moisture accumulation.
- Caulk and weatherstrip leaky windows and door frames.
- Consider installing storm windows and doors, or use plastic film kits for single-pane windows, to reduce leaks and drafts.
- Consider buying an inexpensive programmable thermostat, which raises temperatures when you're home, and lowers temperatures when you are away or sleeping. When adjusting the thermostat by hand, remember that the house will not warm up or cool down any faster if you turn up the thermostat past the desired temperature. It is easy to forget to turn it back down, thus wasting energy dollars. Also, if you have a heat pump, dramatically turning up the heat by hand is costly because it may trigger the inefficient backup heater.
- Insulate your water heater, and consider a programmable thermostat, which will keep heating water only during the hours when it is needed. Set your hot water heater temperature at the lowest degree acceptable to your needs - usually 120° F is sufficient. Don't leave hot water running unnecessarily.
- Use warm or cold water for laundry when possible, rinse in cold, and wash when you have full loads.
- Open window blinds and draperies on sunny days to help light and warm the rooms of your house. Close them at night to conserve heat.
- Plant trees to shelter your home from the elements.
